Automotive Battery Tech Summit 2026

Thomas Knothe and Patrick Gering from Fraunhofer IPK represented BatteryPass-Ready at this year’s Automotive Battery Tech Summit in Munich. They moderated a case study session, led the Battery Passport World Café and contributed to the final wrap-up discussion.

One recurring theme throughout the event was that key aspects of the Battery Passport are still in motion. Several key insights emerged from the discussions:

1) Direct collaboration with experts in battery technology and production is important, in order to ….

• provide greater clarity on the purpose, concept and benefits of the Digital Product Passport system for the battery ecosystem.
• draw on interdisciplinary exchange to address current challenges related to the Battery Passport including the question of whether the Battery Management System could become a key enabler.

2) Batteries are evolving rapidly across all dimensions: performance, durability, cost reduction and the reduced use of critical materials.

•  This development will have a direct impact on both the business model of the Battery Passport and the data points required. At the same time, technological progress needs to be more systematically integrated into the overall DPP concept and the further development of the Battery Passport.
